Figueres is the capital of the region of Alt Empordà and it is located in the north-east of Catalonia, before the border with France. It is the most famous city in the region. It has 43,330 inhabitants with an area of 19.38 km².
The major fairs and festivals of Figueres are: les Fires de la Santa Creu, la Firagri, la Mostra del Vi de l’Empordà, la Fira de Sant Josep, la Fira-Mercat, la Festa del Joguet, la Fira rebaixa, la Fira del Vi and la Diada de Sant Jordi.
The city also organizes three music festivals called : l’Acústica, l’Embarraca’t and el Festival de Jazz.
In this city, the most important museums and theatres are:
1. El Museu Nacional del Joguet de Catalunya
It was opened in 1982. In the museum there are more than 4,000 antique toys like cars, airplanes, dolls, tricycles, robots...
2. El Museu de l'Empordà
This museum has the largest art collection in the region. It was opened in 1946.
3. El Museu de la Tècnica de l'Empordà
It opened in 2004. In this museum we can find technological and scientists pieces that were created several years ago. We can see an example of what we will be able to observe in this museum in the image below.
4. El Teatre- Museu Gala Salvador Dalí
It was inaugurated in the year 1974. It’s the most popular and important museum of the city because Salvador Dalí is a well known painter that lived in this city. There we can find most of his creations, not all of them because they are distributed across several museums around the world. His works are placed where he wanted them to be put.
5. Sant Ferran Castle
The castle of Sant Ferran was built in 1753, it is located on the top of the city, so that you are able to see the whole city of Figueres from there.
