The story of Figueres begins in the Roman times. Figueres is considered a city in 1875. In that year, they began to build various buildings and monuments. The three most important things that happened during this period were the construction of La Rambla and the municipal theater and the arrival of the railway (1877). Figueres followed the new artistic trends, so we can find a mixture of artistic styles such as Baroque, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau.
In the twentieth century, Figueres was a complete city with primary and secondary school, good communications by land and sea, newspapers and so on. But, during the Civil War, the city was heavily bombed and many churches, chapels and works were destroyed. From the 60’s, Figueres has grown and developed slowly: the implementation of natural gas, the new situation of the Empordà Museum, the old theater adaptation at the headquarters of Dalí Museum, the building of the court and several remodelling more.
Nowadays, the city is still growing in different directions and fields.
